Bringing natural light into your home

Given the choice, many people would want to design their own home with ceiling-to-floor windows, impressive skylights, glass panels, and glass brick feature walls. It would be great to strategically place windows and skylights from Schantz Roofing to allow the most amount of light for the time of day you plan to occupy the room. Although this isn’t an option for most, there are small changes you can make to maximize the natural light coming into your home.

Home décor and furnishings

Decorate rooms in light colors and choose shiny, satin paint to reflect the light. It doesn’t have to be white. There is a multitude of variations of white including almond, ivory, vanilla, cream, pearl, or magnolia. Pale gray, silver, and, gold can also be used. Be careful with shades of yellow as it can look dingy in a dark room.

Choose furniture in light colors, particularly large pieces of furniture. Sofas with removable, washable covers can be bought if you are concerned about them showing the dirt. Accent pale colors with throws, cushions, wall art, and pictures in stronger shades. This will add character to the room and help it avoid looking too bland.


When it comes to the windows, thick heavy curtains, drapes, velvets, and brocades can inhibit natural light. Use lighter fabrics such as voile panels or cotton or linen curtains. Sheer fabrics hung on rings can be swept back to let the light in, or choose curtains that can be fastened to the side of the window with a tie-back. A blind is an ideal solution if you want the option of being able to block the glaring sun, for example in a room where you watch television or use a computer. Installing shutters or venetian blinds that can be angled for that awkward afternoon sun that slants in later in the day when the sun falls lower in the sky. Clean the windows and trim back any foliage that may be blocking them on the outside. On the inside, keep windowsills free of clutter.

Other tips for your home’s interior:

  • Natural-light simulating bulbs can be bought for overhead lighting.
  • Utilize under-cabinet lighting, table lighting, and lamps; consider vertical fluorescent bulbs for a modern look.
  • Chandeliers and wall sconces add atmosphere to a room.
  • Mirrors reflect light – hang a large mirror opposite a window to double the amount of light coming into the room.
  • Choose furniture with glass, chrome, mirrored, or brushed chrome trims to reflect the light.
  • Rather than dark carpets, choose reflective floor surfaces, such as white tiles or glossy hardwood.
  • Consider replacing wooden doors with glass doors, or doors with glass panels.

Maximizing natural light saves on energy and lowers your electricity bills, as you are less likely to need to switch on the electric light. More importantly, natural light is essential for health. As well as being good for general well-being, your immune system, and mood, light is beneficial for hair, skin, and nails, and may even help you sleep better at night.
